Syphilis is a severe, contagious venereal disease transmitted by direct sexual contact or transplacentally (from mother to fetus). Caused by the microorganism Treponema pallidum, syphilis infection has three stages, progressing from skin lesions to deterioration of the central nervous system and other organs throughout the body.
